Hancock County Center To Cigarette Smokers

A roadside welcome center in south Mississippi is urging smokers to clean up after themselves.

Throughout this month, the center is joining Keep America Beautiful in a nationwide effort to prevent cigarette litter.

The program aims to reduce the clutter of cigarette butts tossed on the ground around the Mississippi welcome center just off Interstate 10 in Hancock County, near the Louisiana state line.

Mary Beth Wilkerson, director of tourism for the Mississippi Development Authority, says cigarette butt litter affects the quality of life for people and the health of animals. She says it also can contribute to a decrease in tourism revenue.
